Quinine : A Wonderful Plant Medicine

Quinine or Quina-Quina: Nature has forever been man’s best friend and teacher. The diverse flora and fauna combined with the five elements namely the earth, air, fire, water and sky create a perfect balance of the natural world.  Nature has always been and will continue to be the richest source and resource, ever available to mankind. There’s a secret Key that Nature holds within. There is nourishment, healing, wisdom and knowledge, for each one of us. All that’s needed on our part is the consciousness to recognise this truth to access the secret Key.

Quinine : A Wonderful Plant Medicine

The healing properties of forces of nature and usage of plant medicine were known to our ancestors much earlier than their written records available to us.

Our Earth is bountiful in botanical species required to prepare organic plant-based medicine. For every single disease, there are multiple botanical extracts available not only as a cure but also as a precaution, to ward off the symptoms before the onset. No form of artificial or chemically engineered medicines can ever replace the long-lasting benefits that Natural Medicine offers.

The herbal medicine of China, Indian Ayurveda and Unani/ Yunani medicine from Egypt and Babylon are some of the venerated, age-old modalities of plant medicine.  For those who have faith in these modalities, know that the power of flowers, herbs, leaves, stems and roots Of plants and trees still stand their ground, firm and strong. Especially, when compared to any other modern-day chemical-based alternatives.

Homoeopathy, naturopathy, herbalism or phototherapy are all derivatives from the field of plant medicine.  It’s the widely used allopathy that is practised as the mainstream medicine today, whereas the older plant-based and natural medicines are viewed and labelled as cultural, alternative and complementary models. There’s often apprehension in the minds of the current generation to even give it a try, let alone the idea of ever adopting natural cures or remedies for even the most common health issues. Blame it partially on our conditioning or our education system that supports allopathy and modern medical science more than the ancient and traditional practices.

Most of us are at present aware of the medicine called HCQ (hydroxychloroquine) as an effective medicine against covid19. Some of us may have also been aware by now that Quinine has been effective in the treatment of malaria for over 50 years. The main component in HCQ is Quinine. Did you know that HCQ an allopathic medicine or the wonder drug for Malaria has a plant-based composition called Quinine?

There is a naturally occurring chemical compound (alkaloid) extracted from the bark of the Cinchona tree a genus of the flowering plant also commonly known as Quinine or Quina-Quina in Latin America. It’s the same tree which is called Kunen in India. Another interesting fact to note is that Quinine has been around for centuries, in different parts of the world.

Quinine

Quinine has been known for its effectiveness in treating diseases since as early as the 17th century. The South American natives then named it as the ‘sacred bark for its miraculous healing properties.  It has been the main ingredient of the Tonic water used by Europeans for over a hundred years. ( the famous combo- gin & tonic). It is a well-known herb used in the preparation of homoeopathic medicines.

As I mentioned about the secret key of nature, there must be some secret hidden within this gift of nature too. In the field of medicine, the bark from the Kunen tree is considered for its properties as an astringent, thermogenic, spasmolytic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, depurative, expectorant to name a few.

The idea behind this article is not to promote the use of HCQ  or Quinine. Rather, the intention is to throw some light on the plant wealth of this planet, and a hope to create awareness and a little motivation in favour of plant medicine.

On an even a lighter note, here’s my thought topped with a personal share. If natural remedies, plants and herbs have the ability to cure so many serious diseases, that too without side effects, then why not give it a try, for some of the very general illnesses like the common cold, headaches, seasonal flu etc.

Here’s my all-time favourite for treating soar throat and respiratory congestion- A cup of hot tea, (Indian chai)prepared using freshly picked tulsi leaves(holy basil), grated ginger with some crushed cloves and black pepper.
