Reintroducing Children to Domestic Activities

It’s time to remind  young hearts, the forgotten pleasures and hidden benefits of simple activities, of everyday life. As responsible adults, we must pledge to reintroduce the young generation, to numerous benefits of basic domestic activities, primarily the hidden secrets of spending Family Time, without gadgets. Teaching them to work with available resources at hand, than forever yearning for more, and ignoringor underestimating, the presence of what already exists.

Reintroducing Children to Domestic Activities

There are various activities to choose from. They may seem insignificant at first but  prove beneficial, later on. Some of the simple activities listed below can help motivate children towards adopting a healthier lifestyle, within a limited budget. Not only this, almost any activity you do together, strengthens the family bond.  As their guardian,  teacher, mentor or parent devoting some time to instill in them the importance of fitness and sports for leisure and well-being, rather than just academics.

There are many activities, one can plan together with children that may inspire them towards leading a happy, contented life with least dependency on unhealthy distractions.

Activities for Kids

There are numerous together-to-do activities to choose from. Mentioned below are a few motivating ones, to start with. You can create your own list. These activities appear insignificant at first but may eventually benefit the child, towards attaining a dynamic, strong personality.

Cooking

Cooking together with some new and innovative recipes, focussing on high nutritional value meals. One can add more fun to the activity by, reading along or researching on the benefits of each ingredient used. Cooking provides as an outlet for creativity and therapy. Taking up a new task, promotes curiosity, expands knowledge and harbours  a feeling of pride and joy in doing something, they have never tried before. It inculcates a good habbit of finishing the task, starting from the choice of  ingredients, preparation process and time and finally serving the dish on table, ready for tasting.

Gardening

Plan out days for gardening, growing your own fruits and veggies. This will provide children with an opportunity to understand the concept of sustainable living. Participate together in this hands-on experience, straight from the very act of sowing the seeds, taking daily care of them, watching them grow and blossom, to finally harvesting the fruits. This will not only inculcate patience but will bring them in closer communion with Nature and Mother Earth.

Fitness

Taking some time out for fitness together- dance, yoga, jogging, cycling, swimming, or any other form of physical activity, that you and the children will enjoy together. Once physical activity combined with fitness and play is introduced to a child, the benefits are endless. Once the children develop a liking for the same their mind and body wouldn’t like it any other way. The fitter the better.

Deep cleaning or Spring cleaning

Thorough Cleaning of the house is another energy-consuming, yet fun activity to do together with children or as a family. This may include anything from sweeping, mopping, dusting, sorting out cupboards, cleaning wardrobes, rearranging furniture, kitchen counters, garage or washing cars and bikes.

Benefits of simple activities

Here’s an elaboration of the above example of Deep cleaning or Spring cleaning. Something to do not so frequently but essential to do periodically.

Deep cleaning as the words suggest, involves rigorous cleaning, sweeping, decluttering the chosen space. (home or workplace). Together as a team, sort out all that’s around you, to further rearrange. In this process, the child learns to segregate and reorganise items. This helps them to make choices about what’s needed and what’s not.  Retaining the useful and discarding or disposing of, that’s not of use anymore. Such activities and exercises, when practised regularly, have a profound effect on the personality of both the child and adult accompanying them. It helps in improving decision-making skills, thereby making it easier to make choices in life.

For the objects and items kept aside as useful, it now becomes easy to handle them. This sets an example of, how life now becomes more manageable, than before. A person also learns detachment from ‘The unnecessary‘.  In turn, learning to rid of attachment and dependency issues. In future, letting go may become easy for the child. (In some cases this may  prove to be a great tool for overcoming addictive behaviours or unhealthy patterns). In addition to this, one may even go a step ahead, by channelling the discarded objects into proper use. Instead of hoarding, giving things away to those in need helps builds up a sense of compassion and charity.

There’s no season or specific day to start your first activity with children. The day you choose, whatever you decide together, becomes the perfect reason for learning and fun.
