Internet dependency,  synonymous with internet addiction may be understood as a person’s inability to regulate or control the use of an internet device, resulting in one or more patterns of behavior that result in severe consequences on daily functioning. Excessive use of digital devices or internet, including social media, online gaming, browsing, and scrolling, or any other digital interactions, can lead to a vicious cycle, that is hard to quit. As individuals succumb to the allure of the digital world, over a span of time, they start to experience a decline in physical activity, social skills, and emotional intelligence, further exacerbating the issue.

Now let’s dive deeper into the hazards of internet dependence and its impact on the human body and mind. And,not to forget the numerous problems it causes to our emotions, social behaviors, interpersonal communication, academic performance, professional outcomes and family, friends and at work relationships.

Following are some of the impacts of Internet Dependency that one may experience or be visibly noticed by others in the immediate environment :

Decline in Cognitive Functions

Excessive internet use can impair attention span, memory, and problem-solving skills. Constantly switching between online tasks can lead to difficulty focusing and sustaining attention. It reduces critical thinking skills, as users may rely more on online information rather than analyzing and evaluating information themselves. Slowing down or numbing of the brain and experiencing confusion and a sense of brain fog is common. Reduction in work output, inablity to focus during verbal conversation or reduced academic performance are some of the examples.

Emotional and Social Impacts

Constant and excessive use of internet is addictive. Internet use can activate the brain’s reward system. It is the instant gratification through single touch on the device and constant notifications that activates the reward system, releasing dopamine and leading to addiction-like behaviors. Social media notifications of text replies, comments, likes, shares, emojis etc all form part of thr reward system. Sometimes, social media can foster unrealistic comparisons, decreased self-esteem, and anxiety. Internet dependents often experience decline in empathy. Overreliance on digital interactions reduces face -to -face interactions, which may lead to social isolation, decreased empathy, and strained relationships.

Physical Impacts and Mental Health Concerns

Exposure to screens, the lights and messages with constant notifications can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to fatigue, mood disturbances, and other health issues. Growing vision and eye sight problems among younger population may be directly linked to excessive screen time.
Internet overuse can contribute to a sedentary lifestyle, increasing the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, and other health problems. Excessive internet use has been linked to increased stress, anxiety, and depression. Reducing screen time and promoting healthy internet habits can mitigate these risks.
