Self-realisation in simplest words is the awareness of the Self. At a philosophical level though, it may be understood as an awareness of human existence in the Cosmos, comprising both physical and metaphysical aspects.
When one breaks down the term Self realisation, apply it to a much-personalized form, complying with modern times, then, a whole new meaning of the terms evolve.

Self can be understood as a mind inside a body, specific to each person. The self is constantly analysing, regulating, and re-creating the thoughts, emotions, and actions. It is the Self that also assesses behaviors of its own mind & body as well as of others. Here, the Self is both a physical and mental body, having various components of learning, memory, and experiences, working with each other.

Understanding the practical aspect of the Self can lead to greater awareness of the Self, both inner and outer. By inner, means the thoughts, feelings, and changes inside the body, physical and mental. By outer is meant, all the behaviors, actions, and reactions visible outside the body, of a person, with regards to Self or others. Self-realization, hence, becomes the knowing of Oneself, inside-out.

You may journal or write down the responses for the following questions to gain a profound understanding of The Self, your Self.
- How and why you feel the way you do, differently in different situations. For example, what events, thoughts, or behaviors make you feel sad and why?
- What are the various pleasant and unpleasant emotions most often originated by your mind or created by your thoughts?
- How well are you able to understands your own behaviors or the actions of others? Are you able to gauge the origin or triggers for most of your behaviors?
- Are you aware of your negative thoughts and specific actions or feelings those thoughts lead to? Can you spot a pattern?
- On a scale of 1 to 10 How well do you know yourself, with regards to your feelings, your behaviors, and your thoughts?

As you respond to the above questions, make a note of any extra information and observation that passes your mind. You may never know, how much more there is to your Self. There is no end to exploring the Self. No single technique is the best or the only way out. At the end of the day how well others understand you matter less than how well you understand yourself. Self Realisation is the Key to unlocking your innate strengths and qualities. It’s like diving deep, into the knowledge of Self, that is unknown to the world, as much as hidden from your own awareness.
